French Patio Doors

French patio doors, like regular patio doors, have one or two glass panes on the upper portion of the doors. French doors that let out onto an outdoor area, such as French patio doors, will usually have to panes of glass to form an insulating layer of air between the two panes.

Another feature common to most French doors is lighting running the full length of the door. Usually this is carried out with the use of multiple lights located along the length of the sides of the French patio doors.

Traditional French doors were made from individual pieces of glass and mullions. A mullion is any structural material that holds pieces of glass in place. For example, mullions separate the glass portions of French doors from the wooden parts, just as individual pieces of glass in traditional French doors are separated by mullions.

Interestingly, mullions were invented out of necessity. Before people were able to produce large sheets of glass, mullions were the only way to secure smaller pieces of glass and make them into one larger piece.

Today, the term 'French doors' is often applied to several generalized versions of doors that have little in common with the traditional French door. Nowadays, the term French doors can refer to doors with nay sort of window portion and a decorative handle, it seems.
